Ron earned his bachelor's degree in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics from Appalachian State University in 1963. He continued his education, earning a Ph. D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After completing his formal education, Ron spent a year working with Professor Keith Jennings at the University of Warwick as a Research Fellow. During this period, Professor John Beynon was a regular visitor to Professor Jenning's lab. Ron was strongly influenced by this experience which lead to his interest in the analytical applications of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) These early research experiences started what turned out to be a lifelong interest in mass spectrometry. After a brief stint as a Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at North Carolina State University, Ron joined the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) where he developed an internationally recognized research program centered around the application of mass spectrometry to environmental and health related problems. Ron's research activities have resulted in approximately 130 articles published in leading journals. He also has authored a number of monographs and/or book chapters. He has given invited papers at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry annual meetings, The New York Academy of Sciences and at a Eurochem Meeting. He has given plenary lectures at the British Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group and the French Mass Spectrometry Society. He was the plenary lecturer for the Asia-Pacific 2000 Environmental Seminar Series in 15 Southeast Asia locations sponsored by Agilent Technologies. In 1984, Ron left the NIEHS to found Triangle Laboratories, Inc. Under his leadership Triangle Labs pioneered the commercial application of high resolution mass spectrometry to ultra-trace analysis. In the process, the company became recognized internationally for measurement of dioxins and related compounds in very complex samples. The company was also an important contributor to a number of pharmaceutical products reaching the marketplace, including Lipitor. While leading Triangle Labs, Ron engaged the services of accomplished executives to assist and advise him on business matters. This practical, day-to-day interaction with seasoned business professionals solving real problems has given Ron an understanding of marketing, sales, operations, human resources, finance and legal affairs that would be difficult to gain in a formal setting. Ron has recently decided to offer the benefit of the insights gained from 30+ years of intensive study of the interactions of science, business and the legal system to a broader audience. Whether a challenging chemical analysis problem or a difficult organizational issue, Ron is likely to add fresh insights that are firmly rooted in reality. |
