Adding meaning to measurement

Phil's educational background includes a B. A. in
Chemistry from the University of Rochester in 1961 and a
Ph. D. in Biochemistry from St. Louis University in 1968.
He sandwiched four years of military service at Fort
Detrick, MD between his academic experiences where he
worked in the Biological Research Laboratories.

Phil joined the National Institute of Environmental
Health Sciences (NIEHS) in 1968.  There he developed a
diverse research program ranging from analytical chemistry
to metabolic mechanism.  One of his notable achievements
was the development of the first immunoassay based
method for 2,3,7,8-TCDD.  His responsibilities progressed
from Principal Investigator through Research Leader to
Work Group Leader.  His research resulted in more than
140 publications in reviewed scientific journals, several
book chapters and two patents.  His special expertise
includes separation science, xenobiotic metabolism,
biochemical mechanisms of toxicity, trace level metabolite
identification, and quantitative analytical biochemistry.

After leaving NIEHS in 1994, Phil picked up his
collaboration with Don Harvan and Ron Hass by joining
Triangle Labs.  His contributions at Triangle Labs included
production enhancement through improved science,
guidance on analytical methods development, education
and training of employees, and advice to company officers
on all scientific matters.

Phil is an active adjunct member of the faculty of
Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University
of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  He has taught regularly
since 1987 and served on numerous M. S. and Ph. D.
student committees.
